Dissident's Death In Custody Probed

A post mortem examination will be carried out later on the body of a Derry man who died in police custody at the weekend.

Forty-year-old John Brady, a convicted republican, was arrested over an alleged assault on Friday night.

Officers at Strand Road PSNI station found Mr Brady dead in his cell on Saturday afternoon.

Police Ombudsman Al Hutchinson has launched an investigation into the death.

Mr Hutchinson said yesterday he would await the outcome of today's post-mortem, however, it is believed Mr Brady took his own life.

The Ombudsman said his office would conduct a fair, independent and impartial investigation into the incident.

He passed on his sympathies to Mr Brady's family.

Attempted murder charges against Mr Brady were dropped last year, due to weak DNA evidence.

He had been accused of planting a bomb under the car of a former security worker.

In 1991, Mr Brady was sent to jail for the murder of an RUC officer, David Black, who died in a 1989 booby-trap bomb blast in Strabane.

He was released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement, however, he had his licence revoked in 2003, and was returned to prisoned.

Today, SDLP Policing Board member Alex Attwood called for the Brady family's privacy to be respected, describing the death as a "very unfortunate and sad development".
