Unemployment Rate Falls
Figures released today have shown the unemployment rate has fallen by 1% in the second quarter of 2009.
According the Central Statistics office, the latest Live Register figures show that the amount of those claiming benefits has fallen by over 17,000 to 423,639.
However, when the figures are seasonally adjusted, there was an increase of 600 people on the register to 429,400 in September.
The figures indirectly represent a slight slow down in the rate of unemployment.
Willie Penrose, Labour's spokesperson on Enterprise, Trade and Employment welcomed figures even though there had been a slight increase in the seasonally adjusted numbers.
However, Mr Penrose said there were no grounds for complacency in Government with more than 423,000 still signing on each week.
"Apart from the social damage caused by unemployment the numbers on the Live Register constitute a huge cost for the Exchequer," Mr Penrose said.
He added: "With almost 270,000 added to the Live Register, the cost to the Exchequer through additional social welfare payments and lost tax revenue amounts to around €5.4bn each year."
The Labour spokesman further said that protecting jobs and putting people back to work must be a priority in the December budget. In particular cuts to the Capital Programme must be avoided as this will simply dump more people on to the Live Register.
