Ex-MEP's Son Feared Drowned In US

Kevin Sinnott, the son of former Independent Munster MEP Kathy Sinnott, is missing, presumed drowned, in a lake in Georgia in the US.

The 22-year-old Cork man is a final year student at the Southern Catholic College in Dawsonville, Georgia. He was reportedly swimming in a lake near the college with friends when he went missing.

Ms Sinnott arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, yesterday evening where a representative of the Irish consulate in New York met her.

A body was recovered from the lake by the emergency services, but local police have refused to confirm if the body was that of Kevin Sinnott (22), who went missing while swimming with friends at God Creek Golf Club on Monday night.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it is providing consular assistance to the family of an Irishman missing in Atlanta, but a spokeswoman said they could give no further details last night.

Ms Sinnott is chairwoman of the Hope Project, an Irish charity organisation she founded in 1996, which supports people with disabilities and their families.

She was elected Member of the European Parliament for the South constituency at the 2004 European Parliament election, campaigning on disability and education issues.
