Ireland's Transport System To Be Overhauled

Greater Dublin's public transport system is to be overhauled following the announcement of a new Public Transport Bill to end the 77-year-old method for licensing public transport routes.

Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey announced the proposal for the new authority today, which will be known as the Dublin Transport Authority (DTA).

For the first time, private industries will be able to submit tenders to supply transport along some of Dublin and the surrounding area's busy routes.

Under the act the body will also be responsible for preparing a strategic transport plan for the Greater Dublin Area and will have responsibility for funding all major public transport infrastructure projects planned for the capital.

The counties covered will be the City of Dublin, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, South Dublin, Fingal, County Wicklow. County Kildare, and County Meath. An advisory council, consisting of local government officials and councillors, representatives of An Garda Siochana, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and business and community interests, will also be established.

This Bill will also provide that the Commission for Taxi Regulation will be subsumed into the NTA.
