Farmers Milking It For Fairer Prices

Disgruntled creamery and milk farmers have launched a demonstration outside government buildings today, in protest at what they believe are unfair prices for their produce.

Members of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA) protested in Dublin this afternoon using mobile equipment to milk cows in front of the Taoiseach's office to highlight their difficulties.

Some 100 ICMSA members were present for the demonstration saying they are currently being paid for milk at a price below what it costs to produce.

ICMSA leader Jackie Cahill said it is not possible to exaggerate the crisis in their industry and said there seems to be denial at Government level.

The protest comes only days after a statement by the ICMSA asking Co-ops, who are responsible for selling their produce, to stop "sitting on the fence" and to set out what they believe are required to bring about a recovery in dairy product prices.

John O'Leary, Deputy President and Chairperson of ICMSA said: "It is quite clear to anyone with an ounce of sense that deregulation will not work for Irish dairy farmers. It hasn't worked for pig, poultry, beef, grain or sugar farmers and dairy farmers are no different. It is now time for Co-ops to clearly spell out what they want our Minister to do at EU level."

In response to the demonstration, Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith said he is aware of the difficulties, saying that for many months he has been demanding special measures at European level including intervention storage and export refunds.

The Minister said he will be seeking further help next week in Brussels.
