Pensioner Assaulted During Burglary

A man in his 60s has been beaten in his home during a burglary in Co Mayo.

The man is said to be recovering in hospital after he was attacked during the robbery at his home in Charlestown at around 10pm last night.

The occupant of the house received injuries to his arm and leg and was taken to Mayo General Hospital.

A man was later arrested in connection with the incident and is being questioned at Swinford garda station.

The news of the assault comes shortly after reports of a weekend of violence in Co Mayo, which saw four men hospitalised, two of which were stabbed, during a spate of assaults in the Ballinrobe area.

Fine Gael Justice Spokesman, Charlie Flanagan said the recent spate of stabbings and attacks shows the urgent need for measures to tackle spiralling knife crime, which has increased by a shocking 300% in the last four years.

"Eradicating knives has to be tackled as a community initiative - Gardai cannot make it happen alone, a campaign to involve community groups must be launched. I am putting forward a number of proposals to tackle this menace," said Mr Flanagan.
