Second Death In Factory Tragedy

A second man has died from his injuries after a tragic accident at a Co Louth grain factory.

The man, who was aged 35, had been in critical condition in hospital following the accident, in which his colleague also died.

Terry Brennan, 19, of Knockcor, Knockbridge, died earlier after also becoming trapped in an underground chamber adjacent to a grain silo.

A third man, who is in his 40s, is said to be in a stable condition.

Two units of Dundalk Fire Brigade were called to the store just before 9.30am yesterday. Four fire officers wearing breathing apparatus entered the chamber, which contained toxic fumes, and recovered the two men.

The Health and Safety Authority and gardaí have launched separate investigations into the circumstances of the incident at the Drummond's grain factory at Knockbridge yesterday.

In the North, a man in his 40s has also died after being trapped under machinery at a Co Down production plant.

The man was rushed from the Kilkeel facility to Newry's Daisy Hill Hospital last night, but died from his injuries.
