Belfast Man Lifts Top Garda College Award

Top marks have gone to a student garda from Belfast today as he took his place with 270 other new officers at police graduations in Dublin.

Dermot Ahern, the Irish Minister for Justice, presented certificates to 79 female and 192 male Gardaí at the ceremony at the Garda College, Templemore.

The top Commissioner’s Medal - awarded to the student achieving the highest aggregate marks in academic subjects - was won by Garda James Clarke, a native of Belfast.

He will now be stationed at Carrickmacross Garda Station - close to the Northern Ireland border.

Meanwhile, Garda Raymond Moloney a native of Martinstown, Co Limerick, was awarded the Gary Sheehan Memorial Medal, which commemorates a recruit garda who was killed on duty in Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, in December, 1983.

This prize is awarded to the best all-round Student. Garda Moloney will be attached to Terenure Garda Station.

The Templemore Town Council Medal, for outstanding achievement and appreciation in the area of social science studies, was presented to Garda Kieran Murphy, a native of Cork City, and who will be stationed at Bandon Garda Station.

Gardaí are to make a fresh appeal for information about the death of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe, who was shot and killed outside Lordship Credit Union in Bellurgan, Co Louth on 25 January last year. Donohoe and a colleague were attacked by an armed gang as they waited outside the credit union to escort staff and takings to a bank.

Senator and Seanad Spokesperson for Justice Clifford-Lee said: "Rush is a large and growing urban area with a surrounding rural hinterland. Taoiseach Makes Garda Commitments Following O'Higgins Report Publication
The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has committed to increase garda numbers to 15,000, double the number of garda reserve officers and increase the number of civilian workers in An Garda Síochána to free up officers for frontline policing. The Taoiseach made his comments in a statement addressing the newly published O'Higgins Commission Report.
