10 Jobs Lost As Irish Newspaper Closes Down

Ten journalists will lose their jobs following an announcement that Ireland's only Irish language newspaper, Foinse, has folded.

Based in Connemara, Foinse is closing this weekend when its current contract with Foras na Gaeilge ends.

A funding dispute is believed to be one of the reasons behind the shut down, however the two companies could not agree on the terms of a new contract.

Chief Executive of Foras na Gaeilge, Ferdie Mac an Fhailigh, said last night: "I was shocked when I heard Moinear Teo's announcement, especially since negotiations were still ongoing. Foras na Gaeilge regrets that Moinear Teo have decided to cease publishing."
