Upgrade Of Schools' Broadband Begins

The Government has launched the project delivering high-speed broadband to second-level schools across the country.

The first 78 schools taking part in the 100mpbs Post Primary Schools Project were chosen today.

Communications Minister Eamon Ryan said: "Providing our schools with high-speed wireless connectivity opens up a whole new world of learning for our children.

"In classrooms and corridors, students and teachers will potentially be able to carry out interactive chemistry experiments and access demonstrations and exhibitions from all over the world."

Broadband Rolled Out Across Post-Primary Schools
The roll-out of high-speed (100Mbps) broadband to all post-primary schools in Ireland has been completed after the final 269 schools were connected in 2014. The move follows a pilot project in 78 schools across the country that showed high-speed broadband connection improved teaching and learning.

The Minister for Education and Skills has welcomed the start of construction today of eight schools which are being delivered under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. These are the first public sector projects to be funded under the PPP model since June 2010.

Many Schools Remain Closed Despite Thaw
Hundreds of primary and second-level schools are still closed today despite the majority reopening this morning as the cold snap eases. Reports this morning say the majority of schools in the greater Dublin area have reopened. However, many schools in Munster will stay closed until tomorrow at the earliest as roads and footpaths remain treacherous.

SDLP Launches Petition For Restoration Of Integrated Schools Funding
The SDLP has launched a petition calling for the restoration of funding for new buildings at ten integrated schools across NI. The petition follows the recent announcement of the withdrawal of this funding as part of the financial package agreed between Executive parties and the UK Government.

Cabinet Approves National Broadband Plan
Ministers from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan TD and Sean Kyne TD, have welcomed the Cabinet decision to approve the National Broadband Plan.
