Clean-up Begins In Donegal After Flash Flood

Donegal's inhabitants are counting the cost of the damage caused by yesterday's flash floods, as a major clean-up operation gets under way.

The torrential rain made two rivers burst their banks, affecting mainly the west of the county.

More than 20 houses were damaged by the floods, along with around a dozen business premises and many road and bridges in the Gweedore, Derrybeg and Bunbeg areas.

Officials from Donegal County Council are inspecting the many unsafe bridges in the area.

Yesterday, the residents of a nursing home had to be moved to another part of the building.

A woman and her two-year-old daughter had to be rescued by boat from the second floor of a building in Bunbeg after water levels reached 20ft.

The flooding has now subsided but many areas are still affected.

Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer of Donegal Fire Service Sean Campbell said there were no fears of more flooding at the moment.
