Firefighters Threaten Strike

Firefighters could go to a ballot on industrial action over a dispute between union leaders and fire chiefs.

The Government announced it would launch a National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management yesterday, and now union chiefs are furious they weren't consulted.

The Government claims the directorate is designed to address the Farrell Grant Sparks consultancy report, which recommended new institutional arrangements at central Government level to administer the fire service.

However, John Kidd, nNtional Secretary of SIPTU's full-time firefighters Committee, said his members were refusing to attend the new committee because they feel it will not satisfactorily address safety concerns in the industry or provide the public with enough representation on the committee.

Mr Kidd said his members wanted the service removed from local authority control, to a single, straightforward control which would implement uniform standards.

"In the fire service there are 37 chief fire officers and 100 acting chief fire officers and little co-ordination on national standards and training," he added.
