Full Magnitude Of Gáis Leak Not Revealed – FG

Fine Gael have claimed that the 'full magnitude' of the customer names contained in a lost Bord Gáis laptop have not been revealed by the company.

Last Thursday, Bord Gáis Energy said a stolen laptop containing the confidential bank information of 75,000 customers "should have been encrypted but it wasn't".

The Bord Gáis laptop was one of four stolen from its offices on Foley Street in Dublin last Friday week.

Gardaí said last night they were satisfied there was no sinister aspect to the burglary and the burglars were not aware that one of the laptops contained sensitive information.

However, today, a Fine Gael member has claimed the organisation have not revealed the full extent of the leak, saying anything short of full disclosure from Bord Gáis would be "unacceptable".

Fine Gael Communications Spokesperson, Simon Coveney said there were serious concerns that Bord Gáis may not have fully disclosed the magnitude of the data protection breach in the company.

Mr Coveney said he believed the true figure of names and bank details now in the possession of thieves was closer to 140,000.

"Last week, we were told that 75,000 customers' details had been compromised. This week reports contradicting that information have emerged.

"It was bad enough for Bord Gáis to allow thousands of customers have their personal data compromised as a result of sloppy management and data security. However, if it is the case that the company has not fully disclosed the extent of the data breach, it would be totally unacceptable.

Mr Coveney added that most importantly, all customers with personal data compromised must be informed.
