Priest Apologises Over 'Ruffians' Remark
An Offaly priest has apologised after remarking in a sermon that the children attending nearby Daingean reformatory school were "ruffians" who had not been wanted by society.
Some parishioners were said to be "very upset" after the comments by Monsignor Tom Coonan on Sunday, where he alleged attendees at the school, which had been one of the institutions singled out in the Ryan Report for its systematic abuse of children, were "ruffians".
Fr Coonan said he did not use the word 'ruffian' in his sermon.
According to reports it was the second time Monsignor Coonan's comments on the school have upset some people.
Two weeks ago, locals said he quoted an unnamed person who questioned the validity of some of the allegations made against Daingean reformatory in the Ryan Commission report on institutional child abuse.
Monsignor Coonan said he regretted any offence caused and totally condemned the abuse that happened at the reformatory.
