Fine Gael's Flannery Demoted Following Fumble

The Fine Gael director of elections will lose his position before the next election after his fumble over Sinn Fein.

Frank Flannery will retain his position as the party's director of organisation, concentrating on issues such as candidate development.

Fine Gael confirmed however, that Mr Flannery will not be reappointed to the role for the next General Election. A Fine Gael spokesman said the party's leader Enda Kenny announced the decision at a meeting of the parliamentary party on Wednesday night.

Mr Flannery sparked controversy in the run up to the elections, by saying his party would consider entering Government with Sinn Féin if the situation arose.

The comments led to a series of denials by the Fine Gael leader, and accusations by the Fianna Fail government.

The spokesman said Mr Kenny said the next director of elections would probably be a politician, as was the case with Fianna Fáil.
