Vote Of No Confidence Tabled After FF Election Disaster

The opposition leader has tabled a vote of no confidence in the Government, as the early results indicate a disaster for the incumbent party.

The Current Fianna Fail Government have taken a major beating in Friday's elections, obtaining the lowest share of the vote in its history.

Fine Gael have become the biggest party in a national election for the first time, inspiring the party's leader Enda Kenny to table the motion of no confidence in the Government, which will be debated in the Dáil this week.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen said last night he was unaware of any personal criticism of his leadership because of the result.

"I haven't heard any critical voices from anyone at the moment, actually. In fact, what I've been hearing from all of our organisation is that they fought a very positive campaign," he said.

Mr Cowen added: "We're absolutely determined and united as a Government to proceed with policies that will bring order back to our public finances. That is a precondition for economic recovery."

Fine Gael for the first time hold the majority of seats on Ireland's councils, gaining 32% of the vote and earning 325 seats.

Fianna Fail have sunk to a record low of 208 seats.

The Government's coalition partners, The Green Party, also experienced a major defeat at the latest polls, losing 15 of their 18 council seats.
