New Measures Proposed On Gangland Killings
Irish Minister for Justice Dermot Ashern (pictured) has proposed two new offences among a package of measures aimed at tackling gang-related crime.
The Minister want the powers used to combat terrorist organisations to be similarly applied to criminal gangs, as he said speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland.
He said that the aim is that offences such as directing a criminal gang and involvement in criminal activity – which are the two proposed new offences - would be tried in the Special Criminal Court. This way, it would be more difficult for suspects to be awarded bail.
The Minister for Justice also reported that is hoped to introduce post-release supervision similar to that used for sex offenders.
This development was announced just hours after an estimated 5,000 people gathered yesterday afternoon in Limerick as a special protest march against several gangland killings that have taken place in the city.
Limerick's Mayor, John Gilligan called for an end to the violence at a rally outside the town's city hall.
The Mayor said: "The people of Limerick city are heartily sick of these criminals. They have never represented us or don't represent what we are about, and they want nothing to do with us.
"Quite frankly, we want nothing to do with them, and we have to have a parting of the ways on issues like this."
The protest was arranged by Stephen Collins, the father of the murdered businessman Roy Collins in April.
Other relatives of the victims of crime in Limerick joint the protest, including Gemma Coleman, whose son was killed in the city 18 months ago.
