Pessimism In Irish Firms About Prospects

A survey by a leading stockbroker has revealed Irish businesses are generally pessimistic about the next 12 months.

NCB Stockbrokers said one-third of businesses involved in the survey were expecting a decline in activity over the coming year, compared to one-quarter which were expecting things to get better.

The company said activity has already fallen steeply across all sectors, with the transport and leisure sectors reporting their worst-ever decline since the survey began.

Last week, the the Irish Small & Medium Enterprises Association (ISME) called for an immediate Employment Action Plan after Government figures revealed there had been 27,983 redundancies since 2008 – an increase of 154%.

ISME Chief Executive Mark Fielding said: "The level of redundancies is frightening, with no evidence of any respite in the near future. The worrying aspect is that there does not seem to be any understanding of the scale of the problem at Government level. All we hear are excuses as to why we are in this mess without any tangible solutions being presented."

Fine Gael Deputy Leader & Finance Spokesman Richard Bruton said the Irish economy is now teetering on the precipice of a potentially fatal deflationary spiral.

"Matters are getting worse, not better, for the public finances. Tax receipts for April of this year were down by 31% on the same month in 2008, compared with an average fall of 23% in the first three months of the year," he said.

The NCB report also revealed that more than one-third of businesses said they had to lay people off last month.
