RTÉ Journalist Stands For Election

A high profile RTÉ journalist has announced he is to stand for office in the forthcoming by-elections.

It was revealed today that the channel's Economics Editor George Lee has won the Fine Gael nomination for the Dublin South by-election.

He will be standing as a member of the party, who have been hinting they would unveil a celebrity candidate to contest Dublin South.

Mr Lee, from Templeogue, Dublin, has been an economic analyst and reporter with the public broadcaster since 1992 and was appointed to his current post in 1996.

The Dublin South by election will be held in the constituency on 5 June 2009.

The election was called following the death of the Fianna Fáil TD Séamus Brennan on last July.

There is also ongoing speculation Mr Lee could be set for a high profile role within the Fine Gael ranks should he be successfully elected, however, the candidate has denied there had been any deal made with Fine Gael on the issue.

Fine Gael will formally name him later today as its candidate ahead of the nomination convention tomorrow.
