Driver Killed As Lorry Slams Into Houses

A man has been killed after the lorry he was driving crashed into three houses in Monaghan this morning.

A 13-year-old boy who was in one of the houses at the time escaped with his life while two of the homes were seriously damaged. He was not injured.

The driver and only occupant of the lorry, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body taken to Navan General Hospital.

Gardaí are investigating the single vehicle traffic collision, which occurred at Main Street, Emyvale, Co. Monaghan at approximately 10.30am this morning.

Gardai Forensic Collision Investigators are at scene and the road will be closed for a technical examination for most of today 1st May 2009.

A series of diversions have been put in place by Gardaí since the fatal collision. Motorists are being asked to avoid Emyvale, while those traveling to Derry are being diverted at Monaghan via Armagh. Those traveling to Dublin are asked to divert at Aughnaclough via Armagh to Dublin.

Investigation Launched Into Cork Shopping Centre Fire
An investigation has been launched into a fire at a shopping centre in Cork. Cork City Fire Service was called just before 14:00 after a fie broke out in a hair saloon at the entrance to Douglas Shopping Centre. The centre, which also houses branches of Tesco and Marks & Spencer, was evacuated while fire crews dealt with the blaze.

A leading European planner has said she is "astonished" by the sprawl of housing in Ireland. Virna Bussadori, President of the European Council of Spatial Planners described Ireland's rural planning as "random" and said it represented a "spoiling of the territory".

Status Yellow Warning Issued For Snow And Ice In 10 Counties
A Status Yellow weather warning has been issued for snow and ice across ten counties. According to Met Éireann the warning is valid from midnight tonight, 01 April, and will remain in place until noon on Wednesday 03 April and will affect all of Connacht and counties Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford and Louth.
