Unions Urge For €1 Billion Bailout For Workers
Trade unions have called on the Government for a €1 billion job creation and protection plan to tackle unemployment.
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) said the growing rate of unemployment is of the same magnitude as the banking crisis, and needs to be addressed.
Under the ICTU plan, a fund of €1 billion would be used to ensure redundancy became a 'last resort', and instead providing options such as such as short time, part-time working, job sharing, e-working, and career break/leave schemes. The proposal also calls for a guarantee to access to training for those who do lose their jobs.
The plan also includes proposals for an oversight group to drive new initiatives and the removal of disincentives, or barriers in the system. The union umbrella group said this would ultimately mean introducing changes to redundancy and employment law, tax law and the social welfare code.
The ICTU assistant general secretary Sally Anne Kinahan said: "We are proposing a range of new, innovative and creative measures that will harness all the machinery of state to the same objectives – protecting jobs, creating new employment and training and protecting peoples’'incomes."
