Pay Hike Coming For TDs

Over two dozen TDs are due to get a €3,000 pay rise in the coming months despite mass spending cuts and wage reductions across the public sector.

The 26 of the Dail's 166 TDs are in line for long-service increments, which are paid after TDs have been sitting in the Dail for seven years.

Twelve senators are also due to receive an extra €2,200 on the same grounds.

The Finance Minister Brian Lenihan said in the Daíl on Thursday, that the system had been in place for some time and also applied to principal officers in the civil service.

Government ministers are currently operating a self-imposed 10% pay cut despite already losing a further 10% in take home pay due to the controversial pension levy.

However, last month Independent MEP Kathy Sinnott said she will take a 20% pay cut and has written to all Irish MEPs, TDs and Senators asking them to do the same.
