Gardaí Launch St Patrick's Day Road Safety Campaign

A safety campaign is being launched to minimize dangers on the roads over the St Patrick's Day holidays.

Gardaí are asking road users are asked to be vigilant and to take all necessary steps to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the roads.

Over the bank holiday weekend Garda will be focusing on curtailing drink driving, speeding and the non-wearing of safety belts.

A spokesman for Gardaí said the St. Patrick’s Day holiday last year saw 2,656 speeding detections, 530 driving while intoxicated incidents, and 378 breaches of the safety belt regulations.

Since the beginning of the year, there are 1,200 Gardai assigned to the Traffic Corps and extra Gardai are being deployed over the period.

Noel Brett, Chief Executive Officer of the Road Safety Association said: "If you are thinking of getting into the car after a few drinks stop and think".

Gardaí have advised that those going out to celebrate St Patrick's day should a nominated non-drinking driver or use public transport or taxis if going out for a drink.

Garda And RSA Launch Summer Road Safety Campaign
An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) are appealing to all road users to take greater care on the roads this summer, which traditionally carries higher risk for all road users.  As of 26 June, there have been 76 road fatalities, 11 fewer compared to this date last year.

RSA Launch Irish Road Safety Week
