Bord Pleanála 'A Disaster' Says Fine Gael

Fine Gael have called An Bord Pleanála an "operating disaster", over its long delays.

Speaking at the Oireachtas Environment, Heritage & Local Government committee, Phil Hogan, Fine Gaels Environment spokesperson, said the Bord was holding up an enormous amount of building activity when it is badly needed.

Calling the current delays "scandalous" Mr Hogan accused the organisation of showing incompetence as 50% of cases before it are delayed by more than 18 weeks.

However, the Minister for the Environment John Gormley said theBord was currently inundated with 2,500 cases waiting for decisions and processing.

During the meeting Mr Gormley added he intends for professional planners in local authorities to move to An Bord Pleanála to deal with the backlog.

Mr Gormley said he is also considering reducing the numbers needed on panels for smaller appeals cases from three to two in order to speed processing up.
