Unions And Employers Briefed On Economy
Employer and Union representatives are being briefing on the state of the economy at separate meetings held by Department of Finance officials today.
Government sources have so far been keen to stress that the meetings were information briefings only, however there is speculation that the meetings are a re-engagement in social partnership negotiations, which broke down last month.
This has been denied by the department.
The news comes after yesterday's announcement by the Taoiseach that an emergency budget is to be called in April.
Speaking in the Daíl, Mr Cowen accepted that "a combination of revenue raising and expenditure adjustments" would be needed following a further €2bn tax shortfall so far this year.
The Government had previously resisted calls for the introduction of a mini-budget to raise taxes.
Mr Cowen added that he and his colleagues would take whatever decisions were necessary to plug the hole in the public finances.

Wealthier Local Areas To Top-Up Lower Tax Bases
80% of of Local Property Tax is to be kept by councils to fund public services, with 20% being re-distributed to top up funding to those areas with lower tax bases, under new rules announced by the Department of the Environment for 2015.

Urgent Action Needed On Outstanding Tax Payments Of €4.3bn
Labour has called for urgent action on outstanding tax payments of €4.3 billion owed to Revenue as of 31 January, 2019. According to Labour Finance spokesperson Joan Burton, a total of €969m is immediately available for collection and would make a significant difference to public services.
