Cost Of Tribunals Teeters At €434M

The State's spending watchdog has found that the Mahon, Moriarty and Morris tribunals could cost upwards of €434m.

A report published today by the Comptroller and Auditor General, John Buckley, said the tribunals have all lasted much longer than anticipated.

Mr Buckley said that the Mahon and Moriarty tribunals will have lasted over twelve years by the time they end, while the Morris tribunal has taken over seven years to complete.

The report estimates the total cost to the state to be €366 million, including administration costs coming in at €52 million, tribunal legal teams and litigation fees to add another €91 million, €19 million for State respondent costs, €22 million for judges salaries, and €182 for the worryingly vague "third party costs".

Mr Buckley added that there is a need to make tribunal costs more predictable and transparent in the future.
