Over 30 Arrested Over Mullingar Riots

Some 30 people have been arrested in connection with the riots in Mullingar last July.

The riot started at noon July 29th 2008 in the Dalton Park estate on the east side of Mullingar. Two petrol bombs were thrown and one house was badly damaged during the altercation, which was described as a riot.

Gardaí from the Westmeath Division, supported Gardaí from the Operational Support Unit, including dog and air support units, and arrested a number of people this morning.

Those charged are to be brought to a special sitting of Mullingar District Court this morning 11.00am.

A Garda spokesman said he expected more people to be arrested as part of the ongoing investigation into a dispute between two Traveller families which escalated into violence.

The window of an official police vehicle was also smashed. Gardaí from Mullingar, reinforcements from surrounding areas and the Garda air support unit were called in to bring the situation under control.

The initial dispute later spread to the Midlands Regional Hospital, with further altercations between the same families.

Man Arrested Over Mullingar Drug Seizure
A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a drug seizure in Co Westmeath. Gardai from the Westmeath Divisional Drug Unit stopped a car near Kinnegad at approximately 7:30pm on Wednesday. Heroin worth an estimated €45,000 was discovered during a search of the vehicle.

53-Year-Old Arrested Over Mullingar Murder
A 53-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Brigid Maguire in Mullingar. The body of Ms Maguire was discovered by her teenage daughter at about 21:30 on Saturday, 14 November. The suspect is currently being detained under the provision of Section 4 of the The Criminal Justice Act at Mullingar Garda Station.

Gardaí Appeal For Missing Mullingar Woman
Gardaí are appealing to the public in finding Dorothy Healy, 50, who has been missing from her home in Mullingar since Wednesday. She was last seen in the town at around 9.30am on Wednesday morning. She is described as being 5ft 8in, of slim build with blonde hair. She was last seen wearing a denim jacket, a long white t-shirt and blue jeans.

Man Appears In Court Over Gardai Assaults
A 38-year-old Drogheda man has appeared before a special sitting of Mullingar District Court charged in relation to assaults on two gardaí in the early hours of Monday morning. The man was alleged to have assaulted the female gardaí at about 3am on George’s Street, Drogheda, Co Louth.
