Teacher Survey Shows Legislation Wanted On Welfare Reporting

A survey has uncovered surprise results on child protection.

The majority of primary school principals surveyed say the Government should "immediately legislate for mandatory reporting" to protect children at risk.

Around a quarter of the country's principals, were polled one week before the Roscommon childcare and abuse scandal case became public.

It included some 900 head teachers across the country, with the results just now made public.

It found that 85% of the sample said the Government needs to change the laws for mandatory reporting.

Almost half of those surveyed identified neglect as the single most important factor impacting on child welfare in schools.

The results were released by the Irish Primary Principals' Network ahead of its annual conference that opens this evening in Killarney.
