Ibec Seeks Delay Of Pay Increases
The Irish Business and Employers Confederation has requested a deferral of pay increases for its workers under the new national agreement reached last September.
The employers group made the announcement following a meeting with the Taoiseach and Government officials today to discuss a plan to make public spending cuts of €2 billion this year.
Speaking at Government Buildings, Ibec Director General Turlough O'Sullivan said the economic deterioration in recent months had left it with no alternative.
He said it was no longer credible to have an agreement, which the majority of firms could no longer implement, adding that the pay deal of a 6% increase over the next 21 months would be "honoured more in the breach than in the observance".
"The competitive pressures being faced by all businesses are unprecedented. Employers are no longer in a position to implement the increases in the pay agreement," he said.
Mr O'Sullivan said that the position of the deal should be reviewed again after 12 months.

Time For Govt To Act On Gender Pay Gap
Marking EU Equal Pay Day 2018, Labour has said that it is time for the Government to act on the Gender Pay Gap in Ireland. Last month, the Seanad passed all stages of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (Gender Pay Gap) Information Bill 2017, a Private Members Bill initiated by the Labour group in the Seanad.
