Superquinn Chops 400 Workers

Shoppers heading to the North to capitalize on the strong Euro have left Irish shops struggling, and Superquinn has been the latest retailer to downsize due to its losses.

The cost-cutting plan is said to be a pre-emptive plan to save 90% of Superquinn’s 3,300 workforce.

Almost 3,200 jobs have been lost in the Republic this year alone, and another 1,500 workers await the fate of Waterford Crystal and Tara Mines with trepidation.

Fine Gael's Employment Spokesman, Leo Varadkar said the announcement is indicative of an economy that continues to freefall.

"My thoughts, and all those of the Fine Gael Party, are with the 400 Superquinn workers who received the devastating news today that they will lose their jobs.

"It is likely that this is going to be the first in a series of major job losses in the retail sector. 2008 was dominated by losses in the construction sector and 2009 is likely to see a collapse in retail, hotels, catering and banking sectors unless urgent Government action is taken."

Mr Varadaker added that Brian Lenihan should reverse his budget decision last year to increase VAT.
