Stormy Weather Causes Record Damages To Phone Lines

Eircom has said that it is experiencing unprecedented damage to the phone network from the stormy weather.

Gale force winds and heavy rain have knocked over telephone poles and damaged phone lines across the country.

Eircom says it is currently dealing with a record 10,000 faults in its network and is still working to restore full phone services. However, the company says it could be late next week before some phones are up and running for masses of customers around the country.

The damage is extensive and affects every county nationwide except for Dublin.

The extreme weather has also lead to significant difficulties on the roads. In Leitrim heavy snow and sleet have made driving hazardous, particularly around Drumshanbo and Ballinaglearagh, while Gardaí in Donegal have described driving conditions around Letterkenny as treacherous.

Gardaí have advised motorists around the country to take extra care this evening as the poor weather will make driving conditions dangerous.
