Agreement Over Junior Minister Cuts

Conor Lenihan has become the latest member of the Irish Government to support a reduction in the number of junior ministers to curtail Government spending.

Calls for a cut in the amount of junior ministers who assist the Daíl's TDs originated from the Green party, who advocated a cut from 20 to 17.

Martin Mansergh, Sean Power and Conor Lenihan, all Ministers of State in various government departments, have supported the calls.

They have all come forward saying they would be willing to relinquish their roles for the good of the country.

The Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources Sean Power said reducing the number of junior ministers in the present economic climate would be the right thing to do.

Mr Lenihan said the number of junior ministers could be cut from 20, while Mr Power says be believes the figure could be reduced to just 12 without affecting the workings of the Government.
