Relief As Missing Fishermen Rescued

The three fishermen missing since yesterday have been located and returned to their families following fears for their safety over the weekend.

The men's families grew increasingly concerned when the trawler, Banrion na dTonn (Queen of the Waves), failed to return to Connemara harbour on Saturday, after leaving Killybegs in County Donegal on Wednesday with its new owner and two Irish crewmen on board. Contact had been lost since Wednesday sparking a huge search operation amid rough conditions.

The coastguard reported the first sighting for three days of the vessel around 50 miles off the coast of Cleggan, Co Galway.

The members of the crew, Skipper Ted Doherty (40) from Kildare, and friends Aidan Murphy, a father of two from Mervue in Galway, and Padraic Ganley, who are both in their 30s, returned safely to the relief of their families and friends.

It is thought the vessel had experienced engine trouble and drifted over 100 miles out to sea.
