Ryanair 'Flagging' Says Air Lingus Chief

The Aer Lingus boss has claimed that his airline would be "damaged" by a merger with Ryanair.

Chief Executive Dermot Mannion said that the Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary was pursuing the takeover as the Ryanair brand was "beginning to flag".

Ryanair confirmed today that it was closing its flights to and from the popular holiday destination of Fuerteventura from January due to a dispute with a local tourism group and is considering legal action.

Speaking today, Ryanair's Michael Cawley, said: "This is a very black day for Fuerteventura and one which will have a severe impact on tourism and the livelihoods of its islanders."

The claims by Mr Mannion comes following an announcement that Aer Lingus was planning a hefty defense against Mr O'Leary's advances for a takeover.

The airline hopes to use it's recently secured savings following negotiations with trade union officials to rebut the €780 million takeover bid by Ryanair.

Aer Lingus claims the price-tag seriously undervalues the company, while remaining confident such a takeover would be unsuccessful anyway, as the bid could be in breach of European monopoly regulations.
