The opening of a new Tescos store in Drogheda has brought 220 jobs to the town.

The new store is located in the Rathmullan Business Centre, off the M1 motorway, and is Tesco Ireland's 15th new premises opened this year.

Tesco's Chief Executive Tony Keohane said the new opening marks a significant milestone for the firm, which has filled 1,000 new positions in the last 11 months.

"We are also supporting a number of local suppliers and producers who will supply products to this store and to many others throughout the country," he added.

TD Dermot Ahern said the new jobs were a major boost to the economy of the area.

"This is Tesco’s fourth store alone in Louth and they are to be commended for their commitment to their store opening programme and to job creation."

The store will be the second in Drogheda and fourth in Louth where 460 people are already employed by the chain.
