Commission Urges Refund For Lapland Hopefuls

The Commission for Aviation Regulation has urged United Travel to refund its customers and wind up its operation.

Over 1,100 children and adults have booked a Christmas break with the agency to visit Lapland over December, even though it has emerged that the travel agent is prohibited to trade.

The aviation regulator has refused to grant the travel agent a licence because of the company's dire financial situation, sparking pressure from the commission to pay customers a refund before the company collapses.

The company failed in a High Court challenge against the commission's decision not to renew the operator’s licence in October.

The measure is designed to prevent the stranding of passengers if the company collapses while its customers are in other countries, such as the scenes this summer when a number of carriers, such as Zoom, XL and Futura, left flyers without flights home after going bust.

One United Travel flight due to depart next Friday has already been cancelled, while it remains unlikely that the eight other flights due to leave later this month will proceed as planned.

Con Murphy, Managing Director of United Travel, said he applied for a licence again this week, and he is hopeful that the passengers intending to travel to Lapland will be able to, whether with him or another agent.
