A&E Dept Opens At Cork Hospital

The controversial Accident and Emergency Department at Mercy University Hospital in Cork has finally been opened after months of delay.

The €4.7 million facility has been lying idle for the past 20 months due to a row between management and the HSE over staffing numbers.

The staff shortage means that despite the opening a number of services remain unavailable.

Pat Madden, Chief Executive of the hospital, said the delay has been disappointing and claims the department still suffers from a spending shortfall of €1 million, resulting in the department only operating during the day.

The Mercy University Hospital is Cork's second busiest hospital where more than 25,000 A&E cases were dealt with last year, 40% of which occurred in the evening.
