Irishman Drowns On New Zealand Holiday

A young Irishman has drowned while on holiday in New Zealand, it has been reported.

It is believed that the 21-year-old was among a group of six tourists who had been swimming in the Waikato River in Taupo in the central part of the country's North Island, when the tragedy happened.

It is understood that the man got into difficulties in the river around 2pm local (1am this morning, Irish time).

A number of people attempted to rescue him, but their attempts were unsuccessful and a body was later recovered from the river during a search operation, conducted by a rescue helicopter and a coastguard boat.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it has been notified of the death and said that it was helping the man's family.
