EU Will Find 'Joint Common Solution' To Lisbon

The EU will find a "joint common solution" to resolving the Lisbon Treaty problem, according to the Finnish Foreign Minister on his current Irish visit.

Speaking in Dublin today following a meeting with the Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Michael Martin, Alexander Stubb said he and his colleagues in Europe were "waiting for some kind of a response, some ideas, on how we take things forward."

Dispelling fears that Ireland may be facing exclusion from the union without an agreement, Mr Stubb said he was opposed to leaving Ireland out in the cold from a "core Europe", because, as with nuclear weapons, "you can threaten with it, but never use it".

"Ireland is one of the most constructive and progressive member states we have," he added.

Mr Stubbs has been in Dublin meeting with Minister Micheál Martin among other politicians, to discuss the Lisbon Treaty and other issues of mutual interest.

Mr Martin added: "The issue for us, as a country, as a people, is how we see ourselves in the next 10 years within the European Union."

When asked about the financial crisis facing Europe and the rest of the world, Mr Stubb said financial markets have not necessarily had enough regulation, which would be looked at together.
