Retail Sales See Largest Drop In 25 Years

The volume of retail sales in Ireland has fallen in recent months by the largest amount in 25 years, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The agency says retail sales were down 5.6% during the third quarter of this year, the largest decline since the second quarter of 1983.

The volume of sales has now fallen for three consecutive quarters.

Meanwhile, the CSO says employment in the construction industry was also down further last month.

The total number of employees in private construction firms in September was 18% lower than in the same month last year.
