Ryanair Pilot Hailed A "Hero" Following Bird Strike
A passenger on a Ryanair flight - which was forced into an emergency landing on Monday in Rome - has called the pilot a "hero".
The Frankfurt to Rome flight was hit by a flock of starlings that 'bombarded' the aircraft and flew into its engines just before 8.00am, as the plane made its descent into the city's Ciampino airport.
Quick thinking by the pilot allowed him to land the Boeing 737, which was carrying 166 passengers and six crew members who all escaped serious injury, although eight passengers and two crew members were taken to hospital for minor injuries.
Speaking to an Irish newspaper, a passenger who was on board the plane at the time of the incident has called the pilot a "real hero" and described how there was "real panic" and "screaming" as flames hurtled from the engine and blood and feathers were strewn across the fuselage.
The aircraft's right set of wheels were left buckled under the plane, with the engine resting on the ground, meanwhile the nose of the plane was speckled with blood and bird remains.
A spokesperson for ENAC, the Italian Civil Aviation Authority, said last night that bird strikes were common at the airport, with 18 last year alone.

The Irish Coast Guard are still investigating the loss of seven 40ft containers off a small coastal feeder-vessel off the southern coast of Ireland yesterday. The incident occurred some 15 miles south east of Mine Head (Waterford), 20 miles east of Youghal and 16 miles south of Tramore.

Dublin Airport's Main Runway Remains Closed After Incident
Dublin airport's main runway is still closed after the nose-wheel of a small plane collapsed. The incident occurred at around 8.40am. The crew on-board the Metroliner craft were not injured in the incident and the plane has not been removed from the runway.

Pilot Rescued After Ditching Plane Off Wexford Coast
A lucky pilot has been rescued after his plane crashed into the sea off Co Wexford. The light aircraft, which is believed to have been flown from England, went down shortly before 5pm yesterday. The pilot was also believed to have been spotted standing on the wing of the submerged, but still floating, two-man plane by coincidence.

Man And Child Die In Plane Crash In Co Offaly
An air accident investigation has been launched following the death of a man and seven-year-old boy in a plane crash near Clonbullogue on Sunday, 13 May. The remains of the man and child were taken from the wreckage after a six-hour recovery operation. The plane had come down in a bog.
