Aer Lingus Loss Looks Less
Despite its controversial cost-cutting plans - leading to the threat of strike action by its workers - Aer Lingus has revealed that its expected operating loss will be less than first thought.
The loss is now expected to be €10 million less than the figure first expected.
However, despite the reduction, there seems to be no plans to amend the airlines cost-cutting.
The former state-run airline plans to cut nearly 1,500 with an out-sourcing programme, as well as introducing voluntary redundancies and early retirement schemes to save around €74 million per annum.
A spokesman for Aer Lingus said it was "imperative" that its operating costs be reduced, adding: "There is no choice but to address legacy work practices, pay rates and pay inflation which are inappropriate to the business model and the competitive environment in which Aer Lingus competes."
The statement went on to say that the company had forecast a loss in 2009 and that operating at a financial loss is not sustainable.
Workers at the airline being represented by Siptu have notified the carrier that they will engage in industrial action over the cuts following the company prematurely leaving recent talks.
