Man Faces Sentencing Over €440 million Drugs Haul

A 24-year-old Englishman is due for sentence on Wednesday after pleading guilty to his part in the country’' biggest ever cocaine smuggling operation.

Some €440 million worth of the drug was recovered from the sea off West Cork, following a bungled smuggling attempt.

Gerard Hagan from Hollowcroft, Liverpool pleaded guilty last May possessing the huge haul of drugs for sale or supply at Dunlough Bay Mizen Head on 2 July, 2007.

Three other Englishmen, Martin Wanden, Perry Wharrie and Joe Daly who were also on trial in connection with the case all denied similar charges of possessing the drugs for sale or supply.

However all three were convicted by the jury and sentenced by Judge O’Donnabhain.

Wanden, of no fixed abode, and Wharrie from Pyrles Lane, Loughton, Essex were sentenced to 30 years in jail while Daly from Carrisbrook Ave, Bexley, Kent was sentenced to 25 years.

During the trial, the court heard how the foursomes' drug smuggling masterplan came undone after one of the gang mistakenly put diesel into the petrol engine of the small boat they were using for their scheme.
