Man Who Stabbed Journalist Has Sentence Increased
The Court of Criminal Appeal has extended the sentence on a man who left a young journalist fighting for her life after he stabbed her through the neck.
The attack, that took place during an attempted robbery, was carried out in Dublin's Coombe area by Leszek Jarosz, 22, from Poland, and left journalist Mairéad O'Dwyer fighting for her life.
A three judge Court of Appeal described the attack as "extraordinarily savage" and extended Jarosz's sentence from seven to 10 years. The DPP had appealed that sentence on the grounds that it was unduly lenient.
Last April Jarosz, The Mill Apartments, Weaver Square, Dublin 8, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to causing serious harm to Ms O'Dwyer and to attempting to rob her on May 19, 2007.
He also admitted to robbing José Gonzalez and Luka Martinacon on the same night. At the original trial, Judge Patrick McCartan jailed him for a total of seven years.

Public Appeal After Third Confirmed Case Of Measles In Ireland
The Public Health Agency (PHA) has announced that it has been made aware of a third confirmed case of measles in the Republic of Ireland. It is understood that the case was confirmed in a resident of Ireland who had arrived back in the country from Abu Dhabi on Saturday 9 March 2024.

A Latvian man has been given an 18-month suspended sentence and fined €300 after advertising his illegally held pistols in a newspaper. Pavels Samosjuks, who is living in Swords, placed an advert to sell his blank firing pistols with a Russian language newspaper that circulates in Ireland.

A Dublin man has been given a life sentence after he was found guilty of shooting dead a father-of-one who sat as a passenger in a parked car. 27-year-old Jonathan Douglas, aka Yuka, had pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to the murder of Aidan Bryne at Drumalee Avenue on February 20th, 2010.

40-year-old Wayne Kinsella has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Adil Essalhi in Dublin last year. Mr Essalhi (31), a father of five, died after suffering a violent assault during which he was struck almost 60 times in the head, neck and arms with a machete-type weapon and a knife.
