Three Saved From Sinking Trawler

Three men have been rescued from a sinking trawler off the coast of Co Donegal.

It happened around 6.30am on Tuesday morning.

The vessel, the Shaun Shaun, a 50ft steel-hulled boat, was fishing for herring off Killybegs when it began to take on water.

A mayday call was soon received by the Coast Guard at Malin Head from the vessel, which was three-quarters of a mile south of Drumanoo Head, shortly after 4.45am.

The three local fishermen were pulled on-board their sister vessel, the 'Rachel D', before any rescue boats made it to the scene.

It is believed the crew were moving a catch from one boat to the other when the trawler got into difficulties, with a coast guard spokesman claiming the vessel had "sank very quickly".

The spokesman added that both boats had been fishing as a pair for the herring in 30 metres of water when the 'Shaun Shaun' started taking on water.
