Cost Of Halloween Escalates

The real cost of last weekend's Halloween festivities has been revealed - at a €1 million in Dublin alone as the capital cleans up.

The news came as a 19-year-old man was set to appear in court today following an incident in Blanchardstown on Halloween night that left a 24-year-old man in a critical condition.

The injured man was taken to Connolly Memorial Hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning following an incident near a bonfire in Blanchardstown.

It is understood the man sustained his injuries in the Whitestown Gardens area of Blanchardstown at about 1.40am.

Meanwhile, Dublin City Council will spend €1 million cleaning up the aftermath of Halloween activities, including the removal of more than 500 tonnes of illegal material from the city.

This figure includes €350,000 from the council's parks department budget - mainly charges for the disposal of waste - along with a €270,000 spend on house maintenance and an €85,000 budget for waste management.

The top council also spent €58,000 on a public awareness campaign in schools about the dangers of fireworks and bonfires, and advertised free entertainment instead.

In addition, events in Finglas, Ballymun and Smithfield - including several Halloween festivals and a parade - will also cost the council €105,000.
