Army Base Closures Will Proceed, Says General

It has emerged that the Defence Forces Chief of Staff, Lt General Dermot Early, was in Donegal today to meet with officers and soldiers at Lifford and Rockhill.

The trip comes just after news that around 250 soldiers are expected to be affected by the closure of the two barracks, with all existing operations being transferred to Finner base by the end of January.

The announcement in last week's Budget has led to widespread anger in East Donegal, with local politicians fearing millions will be lost from the economy in Lifford and Letterkenny.

However, the Chief of Staff has already said there is "no way" the army barracks at Lifford and Rockhill will be retained, and that the transfer of soldiers to Finner Camp is to go ahead as scheduled.

General Early said both sites in Letterkenny and Lifford would be sold off when market conditions are right.

He told soldiers in Donegal that he expects the shutdowns to be achieved by January 31st, despite some concerns that the deadline is a tight one.
