"Boring" Ireland Pull 8 Points Ahead Of Cyprus

Ireland have pulled eight points ahead of one of their group's major competitors Bulgaria after Wednesday night's victory.

Robbie Keane landed his 35th international goal for Ireland as Trapattoni's team dug in their heels to protect a tight 1 – 0 victory against Cyprus in Dublin.

The goal came just five minutes into a first half dominated by the newly organised Ireland, which saw chances from Duff and McGeady saved by the solid Cypriot goal keeper, Antonis Giorgallides, and heroics from defender Marios Ella.

However, the second half became a more stagnant affair, with accusations of time wasting and negative play by the Irish team, even earning Giovanni Trapattoni's side the mantle "boring" form some elements of the Irish media.

The victory however was a double boost for the team as Bulgaria failed to match their away victory in Georgia.

The win was not without some controversy, with the continued exclusion of Andy Reid still invoking much head-scratching amongst Irish pundits, along with the failure to substitute two visibly exhausted players in the final quarter of the game has garnered a mixed reaction for an Ireland team that looks to be gradually improving.
