Cowen's Budget Pledge

This year's Budget looks set to be even more critical to the economy than in any previous years.

Already brought forward from the original date due to the massive deterioration in the public finances this year, it is to be unveiled in less than two weeks time.

Now, the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, has vowed that he will be taking the correct decisions for the future of the Irish economy.

Speaking at Trinity College Dublin last night, Mr Cowen called on the Irish people to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Government and support the tough decisions necessary to protect the economy.

He said the country had reached a defining moment and warned that the budget would be painful for everybody.

Mr Cowen also promised that the Government would put the best interests of the people ahead of short-term popularity.
