Tributes In Good Voice For Late Opera Artist
Tributes to Dr Bernadette Greevy, whose death was announced today, have flooded in for the Opera legend.
Dr Greevey was the founder and artistic director of the Anna Livia International Opera Festival, and in a professional career spanning over 40 years, she was recognised as one of the finest mezzo-sopranos of her time.
Bernadette died on Friday, following a short illness. She was 68.
Her funeral took place at Raheny Church in Dublin today.
The fine Gael leader, Enda Kenney said: "It is with deepest regret that I have heard the news of the death of Bernadette Greevy.
"I will always recall her performances when Pope John Paul II visited Ireland and at many National Commemoration Day ceremonies in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. Her renditions of Amhrán na bhFiann on those occasions were unforgettable."
"She was a superlative talent, with an unmistakable voice and was a genuine star. My thoughts are with her family at this difficult time."
Minister for Arts, Sport & Tourism Martin Cullen, said her numerous recitals in all the major capitals of the world brought great credit to her and to Ireland.
Festival Manager Róisín McLoughlin said Dr Greevy's national and international contribution to the world of music was immense.

Following a successful run in Belfast's Grand Opera House, Dancing Shoes: The George Best Story opened last night in the Dublin theatre. Nearly 40,000 people saw the show over its two runs at the Belfast Grand Opera House.
